For many seasons now, VC Montpellier has been a mismatched, adhoc, mangled group of riders, with a few leaders. The leaders usually have little to no adequate support in the races they wish to be successful in, whilst some of the support riders mainly just race so they can work. A "light bulb" effect sprung on in the managers head recently, and thus a mass exodus of riders (by mass, I mean 4) has occurred. Previously mentioned Louis-Philippe Van Kamp left after his exceptionally long and successful career, and was preceded by the departure of Ernest Money, once touted as a potential England World Tour rider before the pressure got to him, Mathieu Weyland, a Belgian climber who had little point in remaining in the team, and Edwin Veenhuis, the last of the riders to leave this morning, after deciding his lead out abilities weren't all that.
The team is re-focusing it's attentions on being the best rouleurs and puncheurs, and with that comes a wave of new riders in the form of new leaders potentially, and new domestiques.
The most exciting signing was undertaken this morning. Arvydas Grazunas from Lithuania was signed for his potentially very good ability in the hills. With a smidgen of talent in the steep climbs, and being technically minded he should fit in well to the team mix. To support him, Englishman Wayne Slygh, who whilst being older than ideal, should still have a few years of riding left in his legs. Ernst Ost, from Germany, and Tadek Michal, from the Czech Republic are both riders suited to the flatter terrain, and should provide the duo of French rouleurs on the team adequate support in the seasons to come.
Watch this space for much complaining when none of the riders hit their potential!
